Takeda Pharmaceuticals is launching a new, clinically-proven, anti-obesity drug for the heart of its first-ever blockbuster.
The medication, called orlistat, is a lipase inhibitor that blocks about 60 to 70% of the fat your body makes, blocking about 90% of the amount of your body’s fat.
The drug is being launched by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and is being developed by the company and will be sold in the U. S. in the second half of 2023.
GSK’s patent expires in 2023, and its subsidiary, AstraZeneca, has been unable to demonstrate the drug’s efficacy.
The company has also recently disclosed a new version of its heart drug, called Nifedipine, which is designed to treat a variety of cardiovascular diseases.
Nifedipine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is commonly used to treat heartburn and acid-related conditions.
The drug’s active ingredient, orlistat, works by reducing the amount of stomach acid your body makes. It works by blocking about 60 to 70% of this excess, blocking about 90% of the amount.
The drug’s development is expected to begin in the second half of 2023.
Nifedipine has been shown in clinical studies to be safe and well tolerated with well-being. The company will also begin to make the drug available as a generic drug.
